Cursor vs Claude Code (2026): editor or agent, and what each costs

Cursor is a code editor with agents and many models; Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for terminal, IDE, desktop and web. Prices, limits and who each fits.

Our take: Pick Cursor if you want one editor with a choice of models and a cheap way in. Pick Claude Code if you mostly delegate whole tasks to an agent and want it in the terminal, your existing IDE, the desktop or the browser. They aren't exclusive: Claude Code runs inside Cursor as an extension.

Different shapes of tool

Cursor and Claude Code are both coding editors and agents, the second kind of tool in our beginner’s guide: they work on a folder of code rather than handing you a hosted app. But they’re shaped differently.

Cursor is a desktop code editor built around AI agents, with planning, debugging and an agents window, plus cloud agents that keep working without your computer (Cursor). It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux (Cursor) and lets you choose between Cursor’s own Composer model and models from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and xAI (Cursor).

Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. It reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with git. The same engine runs in the terminal, as a VS Code or JetBrains extension, in a desktop app, and on the web and mobile (Anthropic). It uses Anthropic’s Claude models.

Pricing and limits

Cursor is cheaper to start with. It has a free plan with limited requests and a Plus plan at $8 a month, though Plus is limited to xAI’s Grok models; Premium at $30 adds the other companies’ models, cloud agents and Bugbot code review (Cursor).

Claude Code isn’t on Claude’s free plan. It’s included in Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed annually), Max (from $100) and Team plans (Claude). Max comes in two sizes, $100 and $200 a month (Claude Help Center). If you already pay for Claude to chat, Claude Code is already included, but it draws on the same allowance as your chats.

TierCursorClaude (includes Claude Code)
Free$0: limited agent and chat requests$0: no Claude Code
EntryPlus $8 (Grok models only)Pro $20 monthly, or $17 a month billed annually
MidPremium $30: 4× Plus usage, all modelsMax 5x $100: 5× Pro usage per session
HeavySuper $100 (15×) or Ultra $200 (50×)Max 20x $200: 20× Pro usage per session
TeamTeams from $30 per userTeam $25 per seat monthly ($20 annual); Premium seat $125 ($100 annual)

Cursor's allowance refreshes weekly; Claude plans have a five-hour session limit plus a weekly limit. Claude Code shares its allowance with your Claude chats.

Both meter usage against an allowance. Cursor’s refreshes weekly; past it you can buy top-offs or wait, and you can set spending caps (Cursor). Claude plans have a session limit that resets every five hours plus a weekly limit; past those you can wait, upgrade, or buy usage credits, and heavy users can switch to pay-as-you-go API billing (Claude).

Working style

The practical difference is where your attention sits.

In Cursor, the editor is the centre: you read and change code in it, and the agent works alongside. If you want AI suggestions and an agent inside the place you already write code all day, and the option to switch models per task, that’s Cursor’s strength.

Claude Code is built for delegating a task — “write tests for the auth module, run them and fix any failures” — and reviewing what comes back. It works the same whether you start it in a terminal, an IDE or the browser, can run several agents in parallel, and plugs into GitHub Actions and Slack for work that starts outside your editor (Anthropic).

Agent-style work is now mainstream. In Stack Overflow’s 2026 survey, two-thirds of developers who use AI tools said they use coding agents (Stack Overflow).

You don’t have to choose

Claude Code’s IDE extension installs in Cursor as well as VS Code (Anthropic), so a common setup is Cursor as the editor with Claude Code inside it for larger tasks. The cost is two subscriptions.

Which should you pick?

Which one fits you
If you…Pick
want to try AI coding without payingCursor (free plan)
want to switch between models from different companiesCursor
want AI inside a full editor you live in all dayCursor, or Claude Code's extension in your current editor
hand off whole tasks and review the resultClaude Code
work in the terminal, or want an agent in CIClaude Code
already pay for Claude for chatClaude Code (it's included in Pro and up)

Whichever you pick, the essentials are the same: commit before every agent task, keep secrets out of the repo, and never give an agent access to production data. Our pitfalls guide covers why.

Questions people ask

Can I use Claude Code and Cursor together?

Yes. Claude Code has an extension that installs in Cursor as well as VS Code, so you can keep Cursor as your editor and run Claude Code inside it. You'd be paying for both.

Which is cheaper?

Cursor's entry is cheaper: a free plan, and Plus at $8 a month (Grok models only). Claude Code starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 billed annually, and that plan also covers Claude for chat. At the heavy end both top out at $200 a month.

Do I need to be a developer to use either?

They're built for working on code in a project folder, so basic comfort with files and git helps. If you've never coded, an app builder like Lovable or Bolt.new is an easier start.
